Industrial Psychology And Recognition

In his job as an accountant, Anthony Stirling felt that the monetary rewards for his job were as good as he could expect. What he found difficult to understand was the feeling of lack of worth that turning up every Monday morning gave him. The office was highly efficient but people very rarely seemed to have time to talk to each other and his boss was a distant figure who barely knew his name.

The reason why individuals, like Anthony, need recognition, other than money, to generate motivation in their day-to-day work is not a mystery.
Frederick Herzberg

In 1955 Frederick Herzberg an Industrial Psychologist published his treatise on human relations at work which unraveled the role of influences on motivation at work.

The results were not what logic might dictate. He produced two quite different lists; one showing what satisfied people at work and the other showing what dissatisfied them.

Hygiene Factors

• company policy

• company procedures

• relationship with supervisor

• working environment

• relationship with co-workers

• salary

• status

• security

Motivators

• achievement

• personal growth

• career potential

• job satisfaction

• recognition

The list of features that dissatisfy people at work could not be expected, by themselves, to provide high levels of motivation if they were provided in unrealistic quantities. For example, if your chair is comfortable and reflects your organizational status, you are unlikely to feel a surge of motivation if your boss offers you the same model with an additional cup holder.

The causes of satisfaction included factors like personal growth and recognition. These, it seems, could only be used to motivate if the dissatisfaction list had been rectified. Herzberg does not believe that motivation is absent in organizations with a long "dissatisfiers" list; he merely points out what we should already know; that attempts to motivate may be wasted if dissatisfaction is not addressed first.

Herzberg likened a typical worker to a recovering patient. He concluded that the "dissatisfiers" were actually Hygiene Factors. These are essential for satisfactory recovery of the "patient" but are not, in themselves, able to guarantee full health. The "satisfiers" list is, in fact, a list of Motivators; those things that really cause the "patient" to push for recovery and to become fully functioning.

This powerful analogy makes it clear that, if the Hygiene factors are deficient in any way, it wouldn't matter how much effort was put into the Motivators, the patient could potentially die anyway.

The conclusion to draw from Fred Herzberg's work is that recognition is an important motivator in the workplace. However applying recognition in a vacuum without ensuring that the Hygiene Factors are effectively managed may produce few returns for the effort made.

Herzberg's findings are amplified by other Industrial Psychologists such as Abraham Maslow and Douglas McGregor so, although these simple truths have been recorded for the best part of 50 years some companies, like Anthony's employer either forgot or never bothered to build in an effective recognition system.

Industrial Safety

Industrial safety is important for all employees on a daily basis and working in an area without safety awareness may result in serious bodily harm or possibly even death. Industrial safety is a key factor in running a company and there are many aspects to consider when providing overall safety for your employees. You must ensure that employees have special equipment and procedures to ensure eye safety, ear safety, head protection, fire prevention and respiratory protection. Here are ways to ensure you (or your employees) are protected in each of these areas.

Eye Safety - Any injury to the eye can be very serious and possibly cause permanent eye damage to the victim. It is important to make sure your eyes are covered at all times by wearing goggles or other forms of eyewear. Make sure the goggles you are wearing provide protection around the sides of your eyes as well, otherwise flying debris may come in through the side and puncture your eye.

Ear Safety - Ear safety is important because without it, our ear drums would be severely damaged from the loud noises constantly occurring in the workplace. Ear plugs and ear muffs are the most common forms of ear protection, however there are other alternatives as well, such as disposable hearing bands. By wearing these pieces of equipment, you are not only protecting yourself from loud noises, but also from flying debris which may enter the ear and possibly cause infection.

Head Protection - Protecting your head is easy and can end up saving you a lot of pain if an unwanted situation does occur. Wearing protective head gear can be as simple as putting on a helmet or hard hat before entering a location where there may be falling objects. Head injuries may result in brain damage, but you can significantly decrease the chance of serious injury by wearing head protection.

Fire Prevention - Working in an industrial area means that there is always a possibility that a fire may occur. If a situation like this arises, you will want to be prepared and the best way to do so is by having a fire extinguisher on hand at all tomes. Fire extinguishers are the best way to eliminate or control fires until the fire department arrives.

Respiratory Protection - Working in an area in which the air is constantly filled with pollutants can be dangerous and may ultimately result in serious respiratory problems for individuals working in these areas. A simple way to protect yourself from poor air quality is to wear a respiratory mask when working in these areas. Wearing a face mask can greatly decrease your chances of suffering from respiratory problems in the future.

Other Safety Wear - Other forms of safety wear which are critical in industrial areas include work boots and gloves. These are important in areas which you will have hands-on contact with dangerous equipment or areas where you may possibly drop the equipment onto your feet.

It is important to research and follow all safety rules when working in an industrial area. Everything can change in a split second and you want to ensure you are as prepared as possible for any situation which may arise.

Sentence Summary: This article discusses safety issues regarding industrial companies and ways to ensure the safety of individuals working in these areas. Safety equipment and safety wear are also discussed.

Industrial Sales Down? Then You Need To Tap Into The Power Of Co-Op Advertising

By Conrad Bailey

Stressed out from low sales on the Internet? Can't believe the rising cost of online marketing such as search engine optimization or pay-per-click?  Is this is a problem you're facing, one solution is Co-op advertising.

Co-op advertising is a mutual promotional arrangement between two or more non-competitive companies that share the same target market. For example, a manufacturer of bearings may develop a cooperative advertising relationship with an re-builder of engines. Or perhaps, a distributor of first aid supplies may engage in co-op advertising with a plant safety management firm. Both companies benefit from the exposure while cutting advertising expenses.

Previously, most co-op advertising relationships were between manufacturers and their distributors or the retailers that sell their products. Which usually consisted of running ads in newspapers or magazines read by their target audience. However, ever since the Web came along, there has been all kinds of co-op arrangements between companies in just about every industry.

The Perfect Co-Op Partnership

Manufacturers and distributors of industrial products share the same end user - industrial and technical buyers such as engineers, construction companies, manufacturing facilities, foundries, and other buyers of industrial supplies, equipment and machinery. Therefore, with such a vast target market, manufacturers and suppliers of industrial goods or services make the perfect co-op partnership.

Finding co-op advertising partners is usually not that difficult. After all, cutting advertising expenses is something every company would like to do, so whether your a manufacturer or distributor, or perhaps an exporter or importer, you should have no problem finding cooperative advertising opportunities. You can start by looking at your own supply chain or the companies you are currently doing business with. These are often the easiest to arrange a co-op relationship with, especially if you're a buyer, distributor or wholesaler of their products.

Web Sites Are Ideal For Co-op Advertising

Just about all kinds of media can be utilized for co-op advertising. For industrial suppliers, however, trade magazines is still the media of choice for running coop advertisements. But quickly closing in is the Internet, which many suppliers are finding to be the most effective source for developing co-op campaigns.

Obviously, the most popular form of co-op advertising on the Internet is simply trading banners or reciprocal linking. Yet, over the last couple of years. too many people, perhaps out of greed, have ruined which was once an extremely beneficial method of building traffic. In other words, the bulk mail offers (Spam) to exchange links. In result, more people are now shying away from exchanging links and instead focus more on internal, one way links.

But if you're serious about finding valuable co-op advertising partners online, there still are literally unlimited opportunities available. Whether it's trading or sharing the cost of a banner or logo, text link or display ad, the possibilities are endless and only limited by your imagination.

By all means, when looking for co-op partners, think in terms of quality, not quantity. Don't worry about page rank, that will come naturally. Just focus on developing fewer, but of higher quality co-op advertising or linking partners. Because it's not how many co-op or banner exchanges you have developed. More importantly, it's the value of those relationships that count. Just a handful of the right partners can dramatically increase your site's Web presence.

Co-Op Advertising Using Adwords

I know of several companies in which Google Adwords has proven to be an extremely effective source for co-op advertising. Adwords is nearly perfect for developing, running and tracking coop ads. No other advertising system gives you the ability to access such a large audience so quickly and test your ads so easily. It's practically designed for co-op advertising.

In fact, I can say with almost certainty, and you can quote me on this, that by the end of the year there will be noticeably more companies doing co-op advertising via Adwords. Especially if the bids for keywords continue to rise like they are, co-op advertising maybe the answer for a lot of manufacturers and suppliers of industrial products. Yes, Google Adwords.

For instance, the way Adwords is designed, it's possible for companies to share the views of a landing page, so traffic is filtered equally between the partnering sites. Or maybe the landing page itself can display the advertising content of both companies for mutual exposure. You can even get creative and design the ad to promote both companies, or even use rotating ads.

Or if you want to get real creative, you and your coop partner can integrate your keywords and create a totally different ad that promotes both companies. Again, the possibilities are limited by creativity and your willingness to test different ideas.

Free Co-Op Industrial Advertising Network

If your company is a manufacturer or distributor of industrial products, I want to invite you to join the Free Co-Op Industrial Advertising Network. I've developed the network in association with IndustrialLeaders.com, and it's quickly becoming the most popular online co-op advertising network for manufacturers and suppliers of industrial products. International manufacturers and suppliers are welcome to join free-of-charge. You can get all the details at the website below.

Infomercial Creation: Design To Sell

In infomercial creation, there are a number of different options available to you. You can hire someone to do the work for you or you can do it yourself. There is much to consider about this process so taking the time to plan and execute each step of it will help you to better achieve the results that you are looking for. For many, infomercial creation is the beginning of selling their product effectively.

Why should you hire a team to handle your infomercial creation? Here are some helpful things to think about when considering this aspect.

• Infomercial creation is designed in such a way that it will sell. In other words, really ask yourself if you are a salesman. Do you think that you can present every aspect of potential that your product has? On top of that, do you think that you can provide high quality sales pitches to your clientele? If you are not sure, just take a look at a few of the good infomercials that have aired and see if you can honestly do that type of constructing of sales.

• Next, consider the stats. One of the things that many infomercials need to do is to convince their audience that their product is something that they need. Being able to say that your product is needed because X amount of people had this problem last year, can be helpful. Infomercial creation companies can handle this for you.

• Lastly, while it may cost you to hire the infomercial company to do the work, it is likely that this cost will be more if you have to do the work on your own. Not only do you need to consider all aspects of design and creation, but also your time investment as well. You may find that this isn’t the most efficient way of saving money after all.

Joint Ventures in Real Estate

How many times have you heard the story about the guy who just lost his job, had no money, and his credit history was shot?  Yet somehow he made fortunes by investing in real estate.  Believe it or not this can happen.  Many success stories happen because of join ventures in real estate.

The concept is not new.  It is simply a matter of using someone else's money for profit.  There are many people who are very interested in becoming real estate investors; however they do not know the first thing about the real estate market. This is where someone like the guy mentioned above can profit.

If you have a keen sense of real estate and finance and know what would make a good investment, but have no cash flow, then you are a good candidate for a joint venture in real estate.  Your knowledge and someone else's money can generate a profitable venture for both of you.  It just takes some know how to get it all done.

There are many people who are willing to use their credit or finances to gain a profit in the real estate investment world.  You will need to find these people, either by soliciting in the local papers, on the Internet, or by forming a local real estate investment group.  This type of group is beneficial to everyone involved.

There are times when an investor has done nothing but buy and flip properties.  He or she knows nothing about renting the properties.  The typical investor also usually has one niche he or she sticks with.  Someone who buys strictly commercial properties may know nothing about residential and vice versa.  By forming a real estate investment group in your area, this knowledge from all the investors in the group can be shared.

This can also work to your advantage should you come across a property you may want to invest in but lack the information that comes with the type of property.  There may be another investor in the group who will want to form a joint venture with you in order to take advantage of the deal.  Many times there may be two or three investors who are willing to make the deal happen.  This is also a great way to break into commercial investing.  The more investors there are on a project the less out of pocket expense each one has. You may also find the odds slightly more in your favor with the lenders when you have a team of investors who want to purchase a large commercial property together as a joint venture.

Joint ventures in real estate can offer you the ability to obtain properties you once thought were not in your budget.  You can gain knowledge from seasoned investors or you can profit from a new investor who is willing to back you financially in a real estate deal.  The list is endless when it comes to the benefits of joint ventures in real estate.  By forming the real estate investment group in your area, you can open a whole new world of real estate investing.

Making your Franchise Business work

Buying a Franchise Business is not a get rich quick scheme. You have found the right opportunity, analysed the viability of the business, met the franchisor and signed the franchise agreement. Now the hard work begins.

The first year of managing your franchise business is often the hardest. This is when you will learn the core skills that are required to making your business opportunity successful. In the process you will also find out more about your own strengths and weaknesses.

Before you start any business the first question you should ask yourself is are you prepared for hard work? Unlike employment, you will have to be ready to deal with problems when and wherever they arise.

Are you ready to learn new skills? The franchisor will have provided you with initial training that all the franchisees need. Usually your training does not end there. Once you start running your business you will uncover gaps in your skills which need further training. It is imperative that you plug these gaps as soon as possible.

Remember that the franchisor wants you to succeed. Bearing this in mind it is important that you discuss your successes & problems with them on an ongoing basis. This will help to keep communication lines open and help you to deal with problems as they arise.

Keep in touch with other franchisees so that you can benefit from their knowledge which has been acquired through actually running the business. They will help you to avoid a lot of standard mistakes and guide you through most of the common problems that arise when running your business for the first time. It is generally a good idea to have a franchise buddy who has been running the franchise for many years as well as keeping in close touch with somebody who started just the same time as you.

You should make regular adjustments to your business plan as live numbers take over from projections. This will help you to budget accordingly. Keeping tight controls over your outlays is just as important as monitoring and enhancing sales.

Once you have started making money a new process begins. Now you have to decide how you want to proceed. Is it easier to increase business with your current franchise or is it now the time that you thought about buying another franchise?

Do your employees need further training? Well trained workers are the key to growing your business. Who knows, once you have well trained staff, you might not be needed at all to manage your business! One very important point to bear in mind is that if a member of staff is not right for the job, then it is important that you replace them immediately. You do not want to waste any time training the wrong people.

If you are happy with your current level of earnings then it is perhaps better to focus on managing your business more professionally so that you eke out the last bit of profit from the venture. Systemize everything that needs doing more than once and then?

Learn to delegate. I repeat, learn to delegate. Most new business owners are uncomfortable with giving orders. This is now your business and you are in charge. Your staff will respect you more if you manage your business correctly.

If you follow the above principals then you should be on the path to having a really successful business.

Manage Your Finances & Get Back in Control of Your Life

“If you would be wealthy, think of saving as well as getting”

                     ----- Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

There is no shortcut to personal and financial. Getting rich entails long years of discipline, hard work, thrift, and wise use of resources.  Those who get rich quick usually do so because: they won a million dollars on lottery;  duped other people in a scam;  or inherited a fortune from a wealthy father or relative.

But if we go back to the root of the issue, it may be important to ask, “Why are some people poor?”

One of the main reasons why many people are poor or remain far from becoming rich is encapsulated in two words: financial mismanagement.  Financial mismanagement is about squandering one's resource on things or activities that do not bear fruit or result in additional income.  Mismanagement of finances is also one of the common causes of marital trouble and a source of enormous stress and anxiety in people.

So many people have fallen into the debt trap and now feel totally out of control of their life and finances.

So what can the average person do to better manage his or her finances? You do not have to be an economics graduate or a finance guru to get out of debt and stop the cycle of living from paycheck to paycheck.  To get back on track in terms of your money and investments, consider the following suggestions:

1. Eliminate Your Debts, Avoid Unnecessary Spending

If you are like most people, credit card interest payments actually consume a large portion of your monthly income.  The solution is simple: pay-off your existing debt and avoid making additional loans or unnecessary purchases.  Eliminate debt as fast as you can. Make a list of payables and prioritize either by starting on items that have the higher interest or those that can be easily paid off.  The choice of which debt to pay-off first depends on your paying capacity, or the amount that you take out from your monthly budget to settle the debt.  Another tip is to tell your bank to set automatic payments on your checking or savings account so you can avoid late payment charges and other penalties from the credit card company.  Avoid missing payments since the compound interest on your loan or credit will affect your financial position.

2. Have an Emergency Account

After paying off every single debt, the next step is to start on an aggressive savings plan.  There are actually several savings plans that you should start on.  One such plan is to have an Emergency Account. Always set aside at least 5% to 10% of your paycheck as savings.  If your budget permits it, save a separate amount to fund your emergency fund which you can use for unexpected expenses, sudden loss of a job, hospital bills, and other unplanned spending.  Having at least six month's worth of your salary as an emergency fund is a workable goal.  However, make sure that you use the emergency fund for emergency purposes only and not for trivial spending.

3. Check Out Your Company's Retirement Plan

Retirement plans help individuals set aside money that they can use after they retire.  A 401(k) is a retirement plan that was named after a section of the United States Internal Revenue Code.  The employer-sponsored plan works by setting aside a portion of an employee's salary which, in turn, is invested in mutual funds, stocks, and other investments in the money market.  Another option is to invest the money in company stock.  The advantage of the 401(k) is that the plan is tax-deferred.

4.  Pension for the Self-Employed

If you are self-employed or belong to an unincorporated business, you can study the potential benefits of the Keogh Plan which allows self-employed individuals set aside up to 15% of their income or they can participate in a mutual fund company and make automatic contributions or you can get a pension plan.

5.  Invest Your Money

While saving some of your hard-earned money is a good start, leaving it all in the bank may not give you the results you need.  Get educated about investments and other financial instruments you can use to make your money earn more than what you are currently getting from the bank.  The first step is to learn about passive and active income.  You must also learn how to analyze and choose investments that will earn more money in the long run.   Mutual funds, stocks, and other investment options are available for you to study and consider.

6.   Manage Your Money Online

If you have an Internet-capable computer at home or at work, you can actually manage your finances online.  You can check your balance and credit statements, transfer funds, pay your bills, and monitor the status of your savings through your bank's online system.

Indeed, there is no shortcut to wealth.  Living the good life entails planning, setting goals, discipline, a  great deal of sacrifice.  Getting rid of worry and anxiety attacks over financial difficulties is not an impossible task.  When you save and invest wisely, you will be able to prepare the tough times that are sure to come;  and you can have enough to enjoy life, which is the reason why we need to take control of our finances.

NLP in Training: The Power to Facilitate

How can NLP help to design and run a course that has a positive result for everyone, including you, the trainer? Deni Lyall outlines the processes, gives plentiful advice and shares her personal experiences.

I have a degree in electrical engineering and loved mathematics at school – a logical lady I felt. So there I was, one summer afternoon, listening to the voice of my coach gently encouraging me to walk along an imaginary timeline on the carpet of the hotel room. This was to help me with the problem we were exploring! I took one step and looked at him quizzically. What was supposed to happen? Another step, another look. And another and another. Then suddenly it happened. For some reason I felt a calmness go through me and the situation seemed to be settled. I knew it would be OK in the autumn.

This was my first experience of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and, I have to say, I left that room feeling somewhat bemused. In the following years I heard more about NLP and realised that it is an emotive subject. Should I mention my experience with it to other people or not? Rather than being sceptical about something I knew very little about, curiosity got the better of me and I decided to find out more. Eventually I found a small group of like-minded people and a good trainer. Fourteen months later I had successfully completed both practitioner and master practitioner training.

For me, NLP is a very useful addition to my toolkit. It’s a little bit like the pizza slice a friend recently bought me; I don’t know how I managed without it and it’s handy for more than just pizza, but I’ve still kept all my knives. Rather than allow NLP to take over, I have integrated it into my toolkit and used it to enhance what I already do.

Put simply, NLP is about using the language of the mind to allow you to consistently achieve the outcomes you want. It comprises some philosophies, some tools and techniques, and some methodologies. With around 2 million bits of data coming to us every second we generalise, delete and distort the information to cut it down to a reasonable amount. To do this we use our experiences, our values and beliefs, our attitudes, our use of language, our memories and ‘metaprograms’. The information that is left is internally represented in our mind ,which then produces our (emotional) state, which in turn affects the way we behave. NLP helps to provide choices as to how that information affects us. It also helps us to understand how and why others may react differently to the same information.

NLP is a large topic with many aspects to it and I don’t intend to cover the theory here. There are many good books, tapes and courses on the subject. As a trainer, though, I have found it very useful in three main ways:

• my own self
• interacting with participants
• training design

MY OWN SELF
A key aspect of NLP is about choosing how to react to what’s happening to you. Therefore when I am training I make sure that I choose how I am feeling about it. I want to be in the best frame of mind for training so that I can confidently handle the situations that I am going to come across during the workshop.

First, I am always positive about the outcome. I put myself into the future, at the end of the workshop, using the present tense in my thoughts. I see the participants enthusing about what they have learned and I look around the room with all the workshop outputs. I hear laughter and good comments about what they have learned, and finally I feel very satisfied with what I have achieved. I understand that not everyone will feel like this about the training, but I focus my thoughts on the people who will feel like that. How does focusing on negative thoughts help you? It just makes you feel unhappy!

Tips
• Make sure the feeling you have about the workshop is the one you get when you are feeling very satisfied and happy with something. Get the feeling first by recalling a past experience. Now keep the feeling, then imagine being in your successfully completed workshop.
• Imagine hearing good comments about the workshop in the voice from someone you respect.
• Usually making the picture big, colourful, bright and close up gives it more impact.

Online Scams: How To Avoid Getting Fooled

Beware of the three ways of getting fooled into giving up your money through seemingly innocent money-making schemes. Scams are all around us and it can be found in every single area of life, but more so in such areas where the risk is greater such as when dealing with credit cards, bank accounts and other activities which involve sending or receiving money online.

The Bank/Credit Card Email Scam:
If you get an email asking you to sign up to your bank account or credit card through the email because your privacy is under danger or just to receive a free gift or something: BEWARE! Do not sign up through the internet address provided in the email. If the email does make you anxious, go to the bank or credit card site using the address you know already or through searching the search engines.
How Does This Scam Work?
The senders of the email know that only a very few will sign up but that is all they need. When you signed up to the bogus internet address, they got your user and password. Now its time for them to party!

The Missing Millionaire Scam:
If you receive an email saying that they represent a dead or missing former ruler, high-ranking official or businessman from an African, Gulf or even Russian: BEWARE! They offer you a chance to earn anything between one to five percent of ten to fifty million. And for your co-operation only. Don't get sucked into this, for though they speak of giving you money, they will receive cash and from your account.
How Does This Scam Work?
They will ask you for your bank details in order to transfer the cash and then they will use that to transfer a small amount. Now, once you trust them, they will ask you for more personal and secure details because they "need" that to transfer the entire sum in and out of your account. What they won't tell you is that they will transfer all the money out from your account: theirs and yours.

The Make Money Fast Scam:
This is the most innocent of the lot, but that is also why it is the most dangerous. These are so-called companies that advertise that if you only sign up and use their system, you will mint money. Please do not fall for such schemes. They will pay you some money but then once trust is built, they will fleece your bank account. Remember that quick money scams are the surest and fastest way to lose all your money!

Conclusion:
